ComReg publishes a new consultation on an award process for new 900MHz licences

On 21 December, Ireland’s Commission for Communications Regulation, ComReg, published a further consultation on award options for assignment of new spectrum licences in the 900MHz band. Current licences held by two of the three existing operators in this band are due to expire in May 2011.

DotEcon provided ComReg with advice on a potential award process for new 900MHz licences. DotEcon’s report, issued by ComReg alongside its current consultation, considers potential auction rules, spectrum fees and licence conditions. While this band had previously been designated at the EU level for GSM services only, recent amendments to the GSM Directive now mean that any new licences issued in this band will allow a broader range of uses, including the provision of 3G services. The report can be downloaded here.
