Details published of upcoming 2.6GHz auction in Austria

On 21 April, the Austrian telecommunications regulator, Telecom Control Commission (TKK), published a tender document containing information on the upcoming auction of spectrum in the 2.6GHz band in Austria. The tender document contains information on the award process and invites applications from prospective bidders. The auction will assign up to 14 lots of 2x5MHz and 10 lots of 5MHz of spectrum. The application documents can be downloaded from RTR’s website. The deadline for applications is 12 July 2010 and the auction is provisionally scheduled to begin in September 2010.

TKK has been advised by DotEcon on the design of this auction. It follows a combinatorial clock auction format, originally developed by DotEcon for Ofcom and used for spectrum awards in the UK, the Netherlands and Denmark. The price winners will be required to pay for their assignment of spectrum will be determined by the so-called second-price rule, implementing the concept of opportunity cost.
