Ofcom announces plans for “UK’s largest spectrum auction”

Ofcom has announced proposals for the UK’s largest single release of radio spectrum, which could be used for a range of services such as 3G and mobile broadband. The auction formats for the awards of the three spectrum bands (2500-2690 MHz, 2010-2025 MHz and 2290-2300 MHz) were designed by DotEcon. The 2500-2690MHz auction uses a novel ‘combinatorial clock’ format designed to allow the market to determine the appropriate split between paired and unpaired spectrum applications in a service and technology neutral environment. The consultation document can be downloaded from Ofcom’s web site.
