Ofcom has published a report looking into the options of providing broadband services to rural areas by increasing the transmit power of wireless devices. The report, which was prepared by a consortium comprising Scientific Generics, DotEcon Ltd, Lucent Technologies, and South East England Regional Research Laboratory (SERRL) at Birkbeck University of London, estimates that relaxing current regulations limiting the power output of wireless broadband devices would provide net benefits of £85m-£258m per annum over 6 years. The full report can be downloaded from Ofcom’s website.
